Spanish Inquisition Necklace
This is not normally associate beautiful jewelry during the Spanish inquisition. But in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution stone, with exquisite necklace of diamonds and emeralds.
This is a spectacular double row of diamonds and emeralds ending in a chandelier of emeralds. There is unfortunately very little information on the provenance of the necklace. The large diamonds and Columbian emeralds are likely to cut into India in the 17th century. What would one of the earliest examples of stone cut from the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. There are really only Legends surrounding this necklace. They are constantly covered by the Spanish royalty and French. In the early 20th century, it was purchased by the Maharajah of Indore, the son sold the necklace in 1947 for Harry Winston. Winston then sold the necklace to Mrs. Cora Hubbard Williams of Pittsburgh. It was bequeathed to the Smithsonian in 1972.
Emeralds are a form of crystal called beryl. Beryl crystal is usually clear, but when infused with chromium or vanadium, amount they have various gradations of green. The purest green is the rarest emeralds and many people really want an emerald with blue-green tint.
